Last year at exactly this time, we were heavily into lying to our parents. Like everything that came out of our mouths were lies (and I’m the worst liar who had to see both of my parents daily). We had a surprise 60th + 57th birthday party planned for our parents who are born on the same day – and with a stealthy, investigative woman like my mom, this was a feat that takes precise planning and coinciding stories on all angles. Us kids have planned three surprise parties for them – all with amazing success and while the threats of “for your own well-being, there better not be anything being planned for us” were thrown at us more and more as July 21 st neared, we kept straight, lying faces plastered on.
Jessie is the party planner, and with a new baby being only days old, that was our in. Britt and I are always working, so no one ever expects us to plan a party and Trevor … well … he’s not going to go out of his way without us behind him .. so Jessie was the threat in moms mind. Dad is always up for a party so I’m positive he was secretly hoping we were up to something.
We have the MOST INCREDIBLE venue literally right next door, and Laurie was gracious enough to let us hold our party there. We had the pig and roaster show up the night before, as well as Jessie who hid at my place all day (they had no idea she was up, even though we had planned to head to Calmar for their birthday dinner on their birthday) to put the finishing touch up on things all the while, pretending nothing was going on.
I pretended to be at a wedding in Edmonton and would meet them in Calmar (so I also had to sneak around the countryside all day long … and Britt had to deter them from my house – even when it almost failed when crops were being checked!) and when Shawn went to pick them up, he pretended (while losing it) that our horses were out down the road and they had to pop into Laurie’s to put them back in. Well the shock … oh the shock. We pulled it off. Mom called us assholes and smiled the entire night away.
Thank you EVERYONE who came from near and far to be there for these two and for those who helped us out on all angles – we love you all. It was a memorable night and a party that surely won’t be forgotten. Laurie – thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all you did. xoxoxo
